Message from Chairwoman of Friends of BCH to supporters
I flew to Minsk to attend the Belarusian Children’s Hospice’s International Conference on Paediatric Palliative Care in Eastern Europe. Interestingly, the conference was funded by Swiss and Russian organisations, the former because ‘dissemination’ is what they do, the latter because vast Russia is now actively looking towards little Belarus for advice and guidance on the best model of children’s palliative care to adopt. In this lies the key to the hugely gratifying experience that was to come!
The conference was attended by people from all round the world, including two of the most significant umbrella organisations in the international palliative care movement: ACT, the Association for Children’s Palliative Care, and ICPCN, the International Children’s Palliative Care Network. Speakers from both of these organisations pointed out the lack of children’s hospices in the whole of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Both showed international maps locating hospices with vast empty spaces in Eastern Europe. There was one exception. A large red spot in the middle of Belarus representing the Belarusian Children’s Hospice accompanied by 7 smaller spots that are the small hospices that BCH has helped to set up (the latest is in the city of Gomel). Russia has hardly any spots – in Russia terminally ill children are mostly looked after on hospital wards. No home comforts, not able to feel part of the family, surrounded by bleak hospital walls and technology. Both speakers mentioned the huge significance of the Belarusian Children’s Hospice for that part of the world. Delegates from Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Hungary and Poland spoke about the fantastic moral support, training and advice being given to them by the Belarusian Children’s Hospice in their efforts to set up and run children’s palliative care projects and hospices within their own countries.
The Belarusian Children’s Hospice is a star in the international children’s palliative care movement. Without your help it would not have reached this position. For eleven years our supporters have been raising and donating vital money to this hospice. Until we helped them to set up their own fundraising department just over two years ago, Friends of the Belarusian Children’s Hospice was providing the whole hospice staff salary bill. Now, although our fundraising activities are still hugely important to the hospice (just under 50% of the overall salary bill), we are also making other very important inputs, particularly training their fundraisers, helping the hospice to develop strategy, making important contacts and finding donors.
The main message I would like to leave you with is this: we can all be hugely proud of our input to this project. It is now starting to roll out its model of care of terminally ill children throughout the countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, bringing pain control, comfort and dignity to the lives of thousands of very ill children and their families.
Every time I visit the hospice I am aware that without the years of support you have given, this project would be a mere shadow of its present self. You are all in the bricks and plaster, in the family rooms, in the children’s parties and outings and in every trip made by a medical team to the home of a terminally ill child.
